College/Technical Training Overview

If you’ve ever considered taking your education a step further, you should look to your installation for more information and assistance. They can help you decide if receiving an advanced degree is right for you, tell you which local colleges and classes are offered and find out if you’re eligible for tuition assistance. The Voluntary Education Center, or Installation Education Center, is available to help you put together a plan to advance your education.

Military spouses can also choose to engage with an education and career coach through the DoD’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, or SECO.  These coaches can assist them in exploring multiple tools, resources and information to reach their educational goals.  To contact a career coach call 800-342-9647 or visit https://myseco.militaryonesource.mil.

Navy College

The Navy College Program (NCP) provides opportunities for Sailors to earn college degrees by providing academic credit for Navy training, work experience, and off-duty education. While the NCP is primarily geared toward enlisted sailors, some NCP components are also available to officers.

The NCP services include:

  • Educational counseling
  • Apprenticeship opportunities
  • Distance learning
  • College credit by examination/experience
  • Tuition assistance and much more

Professional Education Services Specialists, Education Technicians, and Guidance Counselors advise Navy members on all matters relating to academic programs, authorize tuition assistance, and administer all on-base education programs. 

Service members and their family members who are interested in furthering their education should visit the Navy College Program (NCP) online. The NCP offers a variety of services to support the academic goals of Sailors and their families. 

Among the services available are:

  • Education Counseling – available to assist service members and their families with choosing colleges or classes.
  • Testing – GED, Graduate Record Exam (GRE), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), Excelsior College Examinations (ECE), SAT and ACT testing is available, as well as test preparation classes. Fees may apply.
  • NCPACE – Instructor-led and Distance Learning Courses with no tuition are available to Sea Duty Unit Identification Codes (UICs).
  • Tuition Assistance benefits – available to eligible active duty service members for tuition costs of courses taken in an off-duty status at a college, university or vocational/technical institution that is regionally or nationally accredited by an accrediting agency recognized through the U.S. Department of Education
  • SMART Transcript – American Council on Education (ACE) college credit recommendations for military training and experience.
