Dahlgren School, a pre-kindergarten through eighth grade DoD school, is located on the installation. Dependents of Department of Defense employees both military and civilians residing on the installation are eligible to attend this school. The School Liaison Officer for NSA South Potomac is the primary point of contact between the military installation, the local school administration, including the Department of Defense Education Agency (DODEA) schools, parents and the community at large. The Navy SLO Program works with state departments of education and local school districts to ensure school personnel are aware of the stressors on military families brought about by frequent transitions and deployments.
The School Liaison provides assistance to military families in education for children in grades K-12, in public, private or home school environments. Navy School Liaisons provide seven core services to assist families: School Transition Services, Deployment Support, Home School Linkage/Support, Special Education System Navigation, Partnerships in Education, Post-Secondary Preparations and Command, School, Community Communications. Dahlgren School, a pre-kindergarten through eighth grade DoD school, is located on the installation. Dependents of Armed Forces members residing on the Dahlgren installation are eligible and welcome to attend this school. Dependents of DoD Civilians residing on the Dahlgren installation are also eligible and welcome to attend Dahlgren School. There are no fees to attend for those students who meet these eligibility requirements.
Since its establishment in 1921, Dahlgren School has been recognized throughout the Navy for providing an outstanding education to students in pre-K through eighth grade. In addition to an extensive academic program, Dahlgren School offers classes in AVID, art, music, foreign language, physical education, health, and guidance. Support services are available in special education, gifted education, and counseling. The individual needs of students are well served by small pupil/teacher ratios. Facilities include a state-of-the-art media center, computer labs, an auditorium and a modern gymnasium complete with climbing wall.
Activities include Basketball, Cheerleading, Rise and Shine Running Club, Soccer, Garden Club, Junior Student to Student (JS2S), National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), Spelling Bee, Student Council, Robotics, SeaPerch, and Principal's Coffee.
The Dahlgren School faculty is comprised of a dedicated group of caring professionals who set high standards for themselves and their students. Working with a supportive administration and many very involved parents, these individuals, through their team effort, are able to create a dynamic environment.
Dahlgren School follows a standards-based curriculum developed by DoDEA and aligned with National Standards. Technology is an important component of the school program. Students and teachers have at their disposal a variety of application and educational software packages, along with a number of internet subscriber services through the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Digital Library. Students and sponsors are able to access and review students’ grades and assignments online.
