Much of the employment in the local Dahlgren community centers around Department of Defense contractors who provide engineering, program management, system engineering, software development, computer and administrative support to the Naval Surface Warfare Division. These contractors recruit people with strong skills and experience in the fields of science, technology, research, and computers.

There are more diverse employment options in Fredericksburg, Virginia, located about 35 miles from Dahlgren. Many employment opportunities exist in the sales, retail, medical, teaching, clerical, computer, customer service, and food services.

The counselor can direct you to job leads and help you develop your job interviewing skills. 

If you intend to secure a job after relocating, remember to securely handle your employment history, resumes, academic transcripts, certifications, and any relevant federal employment documents. Having physical copies of academic transcripts and an updated resume for job applications when attempting to interview for employment. Maintain an up-to-date list containing the contact details of three references for easy accessibility. Additionally, keep hard copies of professional certifications, commendations, letters of recommendation, and any pertinent volunteer work information in an organized space.

The Fleet and Family Support Center's Transition Assistance Program (TAP) helps better prepare service members transitioning out of the military into the civilian world. The program coordinates the Transition GPS (Goals, Plans, Success) workshop intended to provide guidance and assistance for future success. The transition staff facilitate capstones as well an array of other career focused classes. TAP is open to military members who are separating or retiring as well as spouses.

If you are considering applying for unemployment benefits, contact your state unemployment benefits representative for the appropriate paperwork. When you resign your position, include a statement to the effect that you are resigning to accompany your military spouse on his/her PCS assignment.
