Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
The King George County Government Office is responsible for licensing pets in the local community. The only requirement is proof of an up-to-date rabies vaccine. County dog licenses can be purchased at the shelter or at the treasurer's office. They are $10 for unaltered animals and $5 if altered, kennel licenses are also available.
Pets residing on base must be registered with Liberty Military Housing. Call 540-663-2190 for more information.
There is no quarantine for pets arriving from overseas locations as long as the pet owner provides the following:
Relocating your pet should be given as much consideration as the other moving details you deal with. Both cats and dogs undergo stress through a move, so precautions and planning are very important, not an afterthought.
Travel Kennel:
You should use a sturdy crate with a leak proof bottom. It should be large enough for the pet to stand, lie down, or turn around. Line the bottom of the container with several layers of newspaper or shredded paper. All paperwork can be placed in a sealed envelope and secured to the outside of the shipping crate. Allow your pet to become accustomed to the shipping crate a few days before departure so that it will be comfortable in its temporary home.
Pet Health
A health certificate and rabies, distemper, and hepatitis inoculations are recommended. If your pet suffers from motion sickness, ask your vet to prescribe a motion sickness pill. Don't give your pet medication without your vet's advice.
Pet Identification
Change your pet ID tags on the day of the move, to show your new address and phone number. If your pet is flying, mark the pet kennel/crate with the pet's name, your address and phone number so if the pet escapes from the crate it can be identified.
Pet Lodging
Pets aren't allowed in the base temporary lodging facilities. Pet owners either need to locate a boarding facility or find lodging off base that allows pets. There are several pet care boarding places in town and hotels that allow pets that can be found on your internet search engine.
