Welcome to Wallops Island! The Housing Service Center is here to help you and your family obtain quality family housing either on base or in the civilian community.
Navy housing at Wallops Island consists of 14 units located on Skeeter Lane. We have five three-bedroom units and four four-bedroom units all with single-car garages.
We also have five four-plus units which have four bedrooms plus a den and a two-car garage.
All units are completely renovated with all new interiors and exteriors and are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
We also have a playground and dog park on-site. We are U.S. Navy owned and not a public-private venture, which means your Basic Allowance for Housing will be stopped completely. The only cost to residents is internet, phone and TV service.
The Wallops Housing Office has been recognized with a "Best in the Industry" rating for providing the highest level of quality service to residents. This award is based on resident satisfaction surveys and resulted in Wallops Island being named as one of the top housing areas in the Navy worldwide.
If you decide to utilize community housing, the HSC maintains a community rental list of available rental properties in the local area and can assist you in finding a quality and affordable home. The cost for most civilian rental property is well within current BAH rates.
Eligibility
All active-duty members with dependents are eligible to apply for housing, and assignment is based on bedroom requirements and availability.
All family members must have a valid designation as a dependent in order to reside in housing. Active-duty sponsors must have physical custody of children for no fewer than nine months during the year in order for the child to be eligible for a bedroom.
Active-duty military personnel accompanied by dependents and attached for duty at Surface Combat Systems Center are eligible for family housing provided they have at least six months from the date they occupy quarters to the end of their tour of duty at this command.
The control date for placement in housing is the date of detachment from the last permanent duty station, provided that confirmation of the application is made within 30 days of reporting Wallops Island, or the date the application is received by the Housing Office.
Application
You will need a copy of permanent change of station orders and a copy of your up-to-date Page 2 (record of emergency data). Both documents are required along with the housing application to activate your file.
To apply for housing, please submit an application for assignment to housing (DD Form 1746), which is available at your local Housing Office or online (opens in a new window). Be sure to fill out the application completely and clearly. The completed application package may be forwarded to the Housing Office via email or faxed to the installation housing director at 757-824-5382.
Reporting Requirements
All active-duty members are required to report to the HSC whether you want to apply for government housing or plan to live in off-base housing.
Pets
There is limit of two pets per household allowed in family housing.
Household Goods
There is no Personal Property Office here at Wallops Island. Household goods shipments for Virginia are handled at the Norfolk office at 877-619-8596. If you will be living in Maryland, shipments are controlled by Dover Air Force Base at 302-677-2489. More information is available on the Navy Housing website.
Geographic Bachelors
Space-available rooms are extremely limited and there is no guarantee of approval or assignment. All active-duty members considering being a geographic bachelor should contact the housing director for information or instructions for applying prior to making any commitment.
A documented hardship (such as exceptional family member status, financial or other extraordinary situation) that prevents dependents from accompanying the sponsor is required for consideration by the Unaccompanied Housing Assignment Review Board. Be advised that having a home outside the geographic location of Wallops Island is not considered a hardship.

Temporary Housing
SCSC has a Navy Gateway Inn and Suites, as well as bachelor quarters. Whether you need to find temporary quarters or you are passing through the Wallops Island area, you can call 757-824-2064 for reservations.
Wallops Island is located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, which is a rural -- although not isolated -- area with a limited amount of adequate and affordable civilian rental properties. Average rent starts at about $900 for a typical three-bedroom house.
Most rentals do not accept pets, but if they do, a significant pet deposit is usually required.
There are no large apartment complexes in the area. The majority of civilian rentals consists of duplexes, mobile homes, townhouses or single-family homes. The Housing office has established a Facebook page that contains listings and photos of available civilian rentals as well as a variety of information pertaining to housing issues. The page is available under the title Navy Family Housing Wallops Island.
Housing Referral Office
Your contact for any problems you may encounter (discrimination complaints, tenant-landlord disputes or questions or problems about off-base housing) is the Housing Referral Office. Staff is available to assist you on a one-to-one basis to make your move to this installation an easy and pleasant one. They can provide a list of rentals with corresponding locator maps and give you information regarding the area in which the rentals are located.
