Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
There are no quarantine requirements for pets at Wallops Island.
Relocating your pet should be given as much consideration as other moving details. Cats and dogs undergo stress through a move, so precautions and planning are very important -- and not an afterthought.
Pet Health - A health certificate and rabies, distemper, and hepatitis inoculations are recommended. If your pet suffers from motion sickness, ask your vet to prescribe a motion sickness pill. Don't give your pet medication without your vet's advice.
Identification - Change your pet ID tags on the day of the move to show your new address and phone number. If your pet is flying, mark the pet kennel/crate with the pet's name, your address and phone number so if the pet escapes from the crate, it can be identified.
Travel Kennel - Provide a sturdy crate with a leakproof bottom. It should be large enough for the pet to stand, lie down or turn around. Line the bottom of the container with several layers of newspaper or shredded paper. All paperwork can be placed in a sealed envelope and secured to the outside of the shipping crate. Allow your pet to become accustomed to the shipping crate a few days before departure so that it will be comfortable in its temporary home.
Air Travel - DoD has determined that pet shipment will be limited to passengers in a PCS status only. You are limited to a maximum of two pets per family. When you request reservations for your pet to travel with you, you must present a DD Form 2208, Rabies Vaccination Certificate (or civilian equivalent) to your transportation office. Be aware that pet space is limited on flights, so requests for reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Feed your pet lightly before the trip and provide a drink of water and exercise before bringing the pet to the airport.
Your PSD Office can provide general information on shipping pets. The Relocation Office at the Family Service Center also has pet shipment information.
There are no veterinary services on base. However, there are many options in the local community.
