You are advised to make your travel plans well in advance, whether driving or flying into the Detroit Metro area, especially if you plan on arriving on the weekend. It is important to contact the Housing Services Office if you wish to have lodging accommodations with a military discount. The HSO is closed on weekends. It is frustrating to try to find lodging after many hours of traveling so save yourself the trouble. You will also want to know in advance all the information for your trip from the airport to the Detroit Arsenal. Getting around by public transportation can be inconvenient at times, so make sure you check the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport website to make the choice that is right for you: rental car, taxicab, shuttle bus limousine or using public transportation.
If your sponsor is picking you up, be sure to set a time. There is no waiting at the passenger arrival area. It is for loading only and drivers can be ticketed. There is a cell phone waiting area before the passenger arrival area where drivers can wait for the call that you have arrived and then proceed to meet you at the loading zone by the terminal exit doors.
If you get married before your permanent change of station, you must inform your commander and follow the procedures exactly as you are given them. The military will not pay for travel and housing of your spouse if you do not follow proper procedures.
