If you need emergency assistance, you can expect to get help from your installation, your branch of service resources. There are programs to support you in a variety of situations, including victim assistance, emergencies en route and service-specific relief societies. Below, you’ll find types of assistance, contact information, and detailed procedures and guidance to help you through any tough circumstances that you or your family may face.
For immediate emergency assistance, call 911 or Academy Security Forces at 719-333-2000. A Sexual Assault Prevention and Response team member can be reached by calling 719-333-5389. Victims' Counsel can be reached at 719-333-7277, Domestic Abuse Victim Advocate (DAVA) Hotline, 855-336-7833, or Family Advocacy, 719-333-5270.
The Air Force Aid Society provides interest-free loans and grants to active-duty Air Force members and their families, as well as Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve personnel serving on extended active duty. Assistance is given in the following situations: emergency travel, auto repairs and basic needs, such as food and rent. All requests are considered on a case-by-case basis. The American Red Cross is a great resource and is located in downtown Colorado Springs at 1040 S. 8th St. Their phone number is 719-632-3563. You can also contact them at 877-272-7337 for assistance with emergency communication and/or travel between members and families. The Academy Red Cross offers various volunteer programs and training. Some of the programs include volunteer services to the hospital and dental clinics, fundraising and youth activities. Health and safety courses are also available. Courses offered include Babysitting, First Aid, CPR and automated external defibrillator, or AED, training. Instructor training is also available in these fields. Before you leave, make sure you have all important papers with you and not packed with your household goods. Make sure you have important phone numbers, including your new squadron orderly room, Joint Personal Property Shipping Office/Traffic Management Office, Finance office, your sponsor, etc. Your sponsor can be invaluable in case of an emergency while in transit. Spouses who are seeking employment or continuing education should have resume(s), transcripts, certifications and any other items that may be needed to continue with career goals.
The Salvation Army R.J. Montgomery Center is Colorado Springs’ only 24/7 emergency shelter. It is open daily to men, women and families in need of shelter and food. Case managers aid residents in developing a clear path to ending the cycle of homelessness. The center also features a full-service family center where families can learn, play and eat together. The Soup Run serves a nutritious dinner Monday – Friday in downtown Colorado Springs from their mobile kitchen. This is a volunteer powered program, and those who give their time find it a life-changing experience. Transitional housing is designed to help those who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness reestablish determination and self-sufficiency so they can lead successful, productive lives. There is housing for families as well as single men and women. Along with preparing meals for The Soup Run, the Colorado Kitchen also serves low-cost daily meals to seniors in their dining room.
