There are 11 school districts in the Colorado Springs area. The community is a "School Choice" area, so you do not have to attend a school in the district you're residing in, but may not get the school of your choice due to high enrollment, etc. You are highly encouraged to carefully review the district and school web sites before purchasing or renting a home.
There are 11 school districts in the Colorado Springs area. You are highly encouraged to carefully review the district and school websites before purchasing or renting a home. Some school districts are quite large and schools within that district can vary greatly on test scores, graduation rates, etc. The School Liaison can be reached at 719-337-6790.
Public schools normally begin instruction in the third week of August and conclude in the last week of May. Breaks are given for standard holidays and spring break. Check with your school district for a current calendar.
Some schools have overflow systems when there are more children than available positions. In these situations, other nearby schools which are not filled to capacity are designated overflow schools and children are then registered there. Whether a child may attend the neighborhood school is often determined by the date on your rental contract or purchase date of your house. Again, check with the individual school to determine if there is an overflow issue and what documents will be required. If students need to go to a school other than their neighborhood school due to overflow, bus transportation is provided ONLY to the officially designated overflow school.
Choice Enrollment
Each January and February, Academy District 20 hosts a Choice Enrollment period. During this period, students may apply to attend any district school beginning the following fall semester. If the student is accepted in his/her selected school of choice he/she must attend that school the following school year beginning in August. Once the student is accepted in the choice school, the choice school becomes his/her assigned school, and the student will follow the feeder system for that school. Space availability dictates the number of applicants accepted in the choice school. If a student wants to move out of the choice school, a new application will have to be completed during the next available choice enrollment period. Please visit other school districts websites below for their choice enrollment information.
Registration Requirements for Public Schools
Because the state sets the acceptance age for children entering kindergarten, check with your school district for its kindergarten entry age requirement. Public school districts require children to be five by 1 October and others by 15 September. All school districts provide half-day kindergarten at no cost to parents; however, they may charge a fee for full-day kindergarten. Some districts may offer full-day kindergarten for free. Contact your perspective school district regarding its policy for kindergarten.
All new students must provide a state registered birth certificate, immunization record and verification of address, i.e. warranty deed, settlement statement from closing, current signed lease agreement, signed contract with name, property address and closing date, or current El Paso County tax notice. Other documents required if applicable custody documents and IEP (Individualized Education Plan).
School Bus Transportation Fees
The Academy District 20 Board of Education voted during its regular meeting on Nov 10, 2011, to implement a fee for transportation services beginning in fall 2012. Special education students with individual education plans (IEPs) that require transportation and students who qualify for free and reduced lunch will receive free transportation services. The rate for most students will be 50 cents per ride.
