Legal Assistance

The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate at the Air Force Academy is located in Harmon Hall at 2304 Cadet Dr., Suite 2100. The phone number is 719-333-3920. Hours of operation are Mon-Thu, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fri, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. All active-duty and retiree members and their dependents are eligible for legal services. Currently, due to manning, retirees and families may not be assisted. Please call the office number with any questions.

IAW AFI 51-304, Legal Assistance, Notary, Preventive Law, and Tax Programs, 22 August 2018, “legal assistance is contingent upon the availability of legal staff resources and expertise. The purpose of the legal assistance program is to support and sustain command effectiveness and readiness.”

Accordingly, USAFA/JA will no longer provide walk-in services for notary or powers-of-attorney. All legal assistance services will be provided by appointment only for the following limited categories:

• Mobilization and deployment related legal assistance in support of command readiness
• Duty related legal assistance (e.g., powers-of-attorney for Family Care Plans)
• Legal assistance for victims of crime referred by Victims’ Counsel
• Legal assistance for Exceptional Family Member – Special Education Law
• Legal assistance for wounded, ill, or injured service members
• Other exceptional circumstances as approved by the SJA

Estate Planning: Before scheduling an appointment for estate planning, you will need to complete the online worksheet through the Air Force Legal Assistance website, https://aflegalassistance.law.af.mil. The estate planning documents are located under the "Legal Worksheets" tab. Upon completion of those documents, you will receive an 8-character "Ticket Number", which is case sensitive, please retain the ticket number and contact our office to schedule an appointment.

Legal Assistance: All other legal assistance such as divorce, child support, child custody, etc., are scheduled by appointment only.

Household Good Claims or Personal Property Claims: Please visit the Air Force Claims Service Center Website, https://claims.jag.af.mil, for a step-by-step online filing process. If you have any questions, please contact the Air Force Claim Service Center (AFCSC) at 937-656-8044.
