Deployment can be a challenging phase of the military lifecycle, but it’s important to know that you don’t have to go through it alone. The military provides a variety of resources and support programs — ranging from educational briefings to morale calls — for your loved ones, children and service members to ease the stress of deployment. Military members may be assigned to a specific installation but support may come from local communities, Yellow Ribbon events or the installation itself.
Regardless of rank or marital status, an unaccompanied permanent change of station can be stressful. The separation from family and friends combined with a distinctly different cultural environment can be a little overwhelming. It is important to be flexible and prepared for an exciting new experience.
Leave a power of attorney with a trusted friend or relative in case someone needs to act in legal matters on your behalf. As soon as you arrive, remember to notify family that you have arrived safely.
Soldiers on orders to Korea should try to request a sponsor and be sure to read as much information provided in this book and at the beginning of this section for more information about Korea to help you feel more comfortable about your move.
Programs and support group programs are readily available for all family members within U.S. Army Garrison Daegu if by chance their sponsor does deploy from Korea.
Due to U.S. Army Garrison Daegu already being considered a forward-deployed area, very few soldiers are actually deployed from Korea. Most of the major units within USAG Daegu do provide Soldier Family Readiness Groups to help assist families with being in a foreign country. Mobilization and deployment provides SFRGs with briefings and touches base with all services that would be available to families if the sponsor does deploy from Korea.
