The installation hosts 19 tenant activities, including Training Air Wing FIVE, which produces more than 1,200 pilots a year. In July 2023, NAS Whiting Field celebrated 80 years of continuous operation. What was once a field of weeds has become the backbone of the Navy's flight program. During its history, Whiting Field has served as a prisoner-of-war camp for German soldiers, home of the famed Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Team and home of the Navy's first jet training unit. Whiting Field came into being to fulfill the need for pilot training commands in WWII. Today, the installation currently hosts 6 Training Squadrons and 2 Instructor Squadrons. NAS Whiting Field is the busiest air station in the world accounting for nearly onw million annual flight operations including primary flight training of approximately 1200 students each year.

NAS Whiting Field is located approximately 28 miles from the Pensacola Regional Airport and about eight miles from Downtown Milton off of Highway 87. From Highway 90 in Downtown Milton take Highway 87 North to get to NAS Whiting Field.

The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense. Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code.
