Once you have decided that an animal is going to be your traveling companion, plan for your pet's trip in the same way you would plan your own - well in advance. Make sure your pet is in good health. Your pet's well-being should be of primary importance to you. A clean bill of health is an important first step in assuring your pet's ability to adjust safely to unfamiliar surroundings. In addition, most states and countries require recent health certificates and disease documents before you will be allowed to cross borders, making a trip to the veterinarian is mandatory. You may want to discuss with your veterinarian the possibility of prescribing a motion sickness pill or sedative as a preventive measure. Don't tranquilize your pet automatically as this can be very dangerous. Try to avoid traveling with an animal during extreme weather. Try to schedule travel times for early morning or evening hours during the summer months.
Identification of your pet is a must! Ensure that they wear an identification tag, which includes your name, pet's name, and your address and phone number. Also, ensure that the pet's carrier is properly identified. When purchasing a carrier, your pets have room to turn freely while in a standing position and be able to use normal movements in order to stand erect or lie down in a natural position.
If you and your pet plan to stay in a hotel, motel or inn, call in advance to check if pets are allowed and to make reservations. Remember you can ask for your sponsor to assist you with this too.
Alabama does not have a quarantine period.
Pets are not allowed in lodging. Please make arrangements for your pets prior to arrival here by checking with your sponsor or the Maxwell Vet Clinic for help in finding a kennel. Kennels in the area charge $14-30 per day.
The Maxwell Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) has a primary mission of providing preventive veterinary care to Military Working Dogs and secondarily provides service to Service Member's privately owned animals. Dogs and cats are seen by appointment basis only, we do not see any other species at this facility. Please call 334-953-7357 or email maxwellvetclinic@gmail.com for information or to make an appointment.
Active duty, reservists, dependents, and retired veterans with full medical benefits may use the clinic.
We are located behind the AAFES PX/BX and in the same building as Dry Cleaners on Arnold Street.
Services provided include, but are not limited to: routine vaccinations, nail trims, diagnostics for intestinal parasites, heartworm testing and preventatives, CONUS health certificates, common pet medications, flea and tick products, and treatment of diseases and parasites that may be transmitted from animals to humans.
We are not authorized to provide any surgical procedures, grooming, or boarding kennels services.
All veterinary services are by appointment only; emergency and surgical services are not available at this facility. This is a WELLNESS CLINIC only, sick-call appointments are recommended to seek off-base care as our diagnostics and equipment are limited.
If you have a pet now or plan on getting one in the future, you should, at a minimum, ensure your animal is provided with the following preventive health measures:
It is recommended that all pets be microchipped for identification and PCS purposes.
Adult dog vaccinations should include Distemper / Parvovirus (DAPv) and Rabies. Additionally, if you plan on boarding your animal anytime within the next 6 months it is recommended to verify any additional vaccine or fecal requirements with your boarding facility. Leptospirosis, Bordetella (kennel cough) and/or Influenza vaccines may be required for boarding and can be given upon request. We also recommend that all dogs be kept on heartworm preventative all year round.
Adult cat annual vaccinations should include Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (FVRCP) and Rabies. Additionally, cats can be vaccinated for the Feline Leukemia Virus, upon request.
Puppies/kittens should start their Dapv/FVRCP vaccinations at 6 to 8 weeks of age and receive boosters every 3 to 4 weeks until they are 12 to 16 weeks old and can get their first Rabies vaccination. We recommend deworming all puppies and kittens during their first two visits and starting them on heartworm and/or flea and tick prevention.
