The Family Employment Readiness Program at Naval Base Ventura County provides resources, workshops and guidance to help service members and their families find meaningful employment. Services include career-themed classes, walk-in Career Resource Centers, drop-in resume coaching, and an email distribution list through which job openings are shared. One-on-one consultations and mock interviews are also available by appointment. Services are provided at both Port Hueneme and Point Mugu.

The Transition Assistance Program includes help for military personnel who are separating or retiring from military service. Classes offered include TAP (any personnel separating) and Retiree TAP(any personnel transferring to the Fleet Reserves or retiring). Retirees may attend classes up to 24 months prior to retirement; separating personnel may attend classes 12 months prior to separating. Spouses are also encouraged to attend the seminars. For enrollment, you should contact your Command Career Counselor and complete a pre-separation counseling checklist.
Through the Transition Assistance Management Program, a two-day workshop dedicated to higher education assistance helps students in choosing a program of study, selecting an institution, exploring funding sources and navigating the admission process. Throughout the workshop, students will have the opportunity to conduct research as each topic is explored and complete a comparison of at least two institutions.
The Department of Labor facilitates the Vocational Track to help transitioning service members on their career exploration and development. Participants will learn to narrow their career focus by establishing achievable goals and development strategies. Workshop leaders will guide participants through a variety of career considerations, including labor market projections, education, apprenticeships, certifications and licensure requirements. At the end of the workshop, participants will get detailed reports of recommended careers that match both their interests and natural abilities.
The Small Business Administration teaches the Boots to Business two-day track, an entrepreneurial education and training program offered as part of the Department of Defense's TAP. The curriculum includes steps for evaluating business concepts, the foundational knowledge required to develop a business plan and information on SBA resources available to help access start-up capital and additional technical assistance.
The Department of Labor (DOL) teaches a two-day employment track, which takes a more in-depth look into the employment field. For those looking to start a new career, this track offers information and resources on resumes, federal resumes, LinkedIn and more.
Another option is the Career Options and Navy Skills Evaluation Program. This is a two-day course that can help you make informed career and lifestyle decisions in order to remain competitive throughout your Navy career and thereafter. The course helps identify individual skills and talents, develop long-term professional and personal goals, plan for financial stability, research related civilian skills and qualifications, and establish long-term career planning objectives.
