Special and Critical Installation Information

Naval Base Ventura County encompasses two separate geographical locations about 10 miles apart. Some services are provided on both bases and some are only available at Point Mugu or Port Hueneme (i.e. gas stations on both bases but only one commissary at Port Hueneme). Asking questions and planning ahead are the best methods to ensure you make the right decisions concerning housing particularly, if you have family members.

Having a personal vehicle is crucial. There is no shuttle on or between the two bases and community transportation is limited.

Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions

The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included. The operator can be reached at commercial (719) 567-1110. Please note that long distance charges may be incurred.

Mission

NBVC provides the Pacific Fleet with a premier mobilization site, complete with a deep water port, rail head, and airfield; all in one package. In support of the Pacific Fleet, NBVC Point Mugu is home to Airborne Command Control and Logistics Wing which supports four E-2C Hawkeye squadrons. NBVC Point Mugu is also home to Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 55, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Three Zero and NAVAIR WD. NBVC Port Hueneme is home to 30th Naval Construction Regiment which provides training support to four Sea Bee Battalions and with 31st Seabee readiness Group. Also, Naval Facilities Expeditionary Logistics Center, Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center, Center for Seabee and facilities Engineering, Engineering Duty Officers School and Port Hueneme Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center are some of the major commands at NBVC Port Hueneme.

History

Since 1946 Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Point Mugu has had an impact on the research, development, testing, and evaluation of missile and software weapons systems development. NBVC Port Hueneme has provided integral supplies, equipment, and roads to support not only the Seabees, but the Army, Air Force and Marines during World War II, Koran and Vietnam wars.  On Oct. 11, 2000, the commands of Point Mugu and Port Hueneme merged into one command with three physical locations including San Nicolas Island.  Reporting to U.S. Pacific Fleet via regional management by Navy Region Southwest in San Diego, NBVC was established with the Port Hueneme site as providers of base operating support, and Point Mugu as provider of aviation support. As of the 2020 U.S. census, the population in Ventura County was 839,784.  Ventura County comprises the Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Port Hueneme/Point Mugu is located on the vast Oxnard plain, just 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles, California. The coastal area of Ventura County boasts some of the finest weather anywhere in the world. The superb weather, combined with miles of beautiful shoreline and nearby mountains, offers a unique scenic and thoroughly enjoyable environment. NBVC's nearest cities of Port Hueneme, Oxnard, Ventura and Camarillo offer a wide variety of shopping, restaurants, and recreational opportunities to suit everyone. Ventura County is considered a high cost of living area but is very supportive of its military residents. Many businesses offer military discounts and both landlords and employers seek military members to live and work here. Directions to NBVC Port Hueneme

Traveling to port Hueneme from US 101 either North or South:

  1. Exit at Victoria Ave and proceed south.
  2. Follow Victoria Ave about 6 miles to Channel Islands Blvd.
  3. Turn left on Channel Islands Blvd.
  4. Turn right on Ventura Rd and the first entrance to the base is at Sunkist.  Turn right into gate.
  5. Sunkist Gate is open 24hrs.

Directions to NBVC Point Mugu

Directions from LAX:

  1. Start out going East on World Way/Center Way.
  2. Take the Sepulveda Blvd. N/CA-1N ramp.
  3. Merge onto S. Sepulveda Blvd.
  4. Turn right onto La Tijera Blvd.
  5. Merge onto I-405 N via ramp on the left.
  6. Merge onto I-10 W via exit 53B (toward Santa Monica)
  7. I-10 W becomes CA-1 N
  8. Take CA-1 N approximately 40 miles
  9. Take the exit for Las Posas Rd.
  10. Turn left onto Las Posas Rd.
  11. Las Posas Gate is opne 24hrs

Directions from Las Posas Gate to Quarterdeck

  1. After entering the Las Posas Gate, turn right onto Ronald Reagan.
  2. Turn right onto Main Rd.
  3. Turn left onto 6th.
  4. Bldg 1 is located on left (Quarterdeck)

Gate hours:

NBVC has access points for both Port Hueneme (PH) and Point Mugu (PM). The main Knott Gate (PH) and Las Posas/Gate 3 (PM) POV are both open 24 hours. Pleasant Valley Rd (PH) and Mugu Rd./Gate 2 (PM) are both open 0600-1700, M-F. Victoria POV Gate (PH) is also open M-F, 0600-1700. Both Victoria (PH) and Las Posas/Gate 3 (PM) Commercial Gates are open weekdays from 0700-1430, except on holidays. Main Rd/Gate 1 (PM), along with Goodspeed (PH) and Bard Gate (PH) are currently closed until further notice.
