Housing Information & Resources
As the economy continues to grow and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, housing costs in the area have been rising. To understand your Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), contact the Base Housing Office. Before making any financial commitments to off-base housing, it's strongly recommended that you schedule an appointment with a Personal Financial Management Counselor at the Fleet and Family Support Center. They can help you create a realistic budget and determine what housing options are within your means.
Although BAH was increased in 2005 to help offset the cost of living off-base, you should still anticipate some out-of-pocket expenses.

Finding Off-Base Housing
Work closely with your sponsor to obtain apartment guides and real estate listings, or explore online resources to research affordable housing options in the area. There are numerous housing choices conveniently located near the base, including both short-term and long-term rentals. Many apartment complexes also offer fully furnished units to accommodate transitional needs.
The Housing Referral Office (HRO) is your primary resource for all off-base housing matters. They can assist with:
The HRO provides up-to-date listings of available rentals, along with locator maps and detailed information about local neighborhoods. Be sure to ask about the Rental Partnership Program, which offers financial benefits through agreements with participating apartment complexes in the community.
Important Reminder: All renters are strongly encouraged to carry renters insurance to protect against fire, theft, and other potential damages. Keep in mind that while a property owner’s insurance covers the structure, it does not protect your personal belongings. Make sure to transfer or obtain appropriate coverage as soon as you arrive.
Visit InMyArea.com to search for utility providers based on your zip code. This website serves as a one-stop shop where you can explore your options, compare prices and purchase services.
Contact the Housing Service Center at 228-871-2586 or call DSN 312-868-2586 as soon as orders are received to apply and be placed on one of two (Advanced or Actual) housing waiting lists.
