Good prospects
Employment in the local area is oriented toward service, retail, and the health industry. Many jobs exist in clerical, health services, bookkeeping and accounting, food and beverage services, data entry, equipment repair, construction, childcare and education.
Many positions exist in retail sales and within the banking industry.
Fair prospects
Textile manufacturing and information systems have more limited openings. However, there are good prospects in nearby counties and are only a 30-minute drive from the installation.
Due to the mobile nature of the military lifestyle, individuals with education and/or experience in the health care and education fields are often more successful in finding employment upon relocation than are individuals in other career fields. Because of this, and because of the relatively low wages paid in the local area, many spouses choose to improve their future employment prospects while at Seymour Johnson through training or education, rather than seeking employment while their sponsor is assigned here. The North Carolina Office of State Human Resources website offers great information regarding Military Spouse Employment @ Military Spouse Employment Resources | NC Office of Human Resources. However, the M&FRC staff can also provide information on current resources available to assist in these areas.
Unemployment compensation may be available for the spouses of newly assigned military members or civilian employees who was employed prior to their move to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. For information, visit the https://www.des.nc.gov/individuals/apply-ui
