Government Housing

When planning for a move with the military, you might consider moving into government housing.Government housing is owned and maintain by the Department of Defense and is typically on the installation. At SHAPE/Chievres, Government Housing is leased and is outside, but close to the installation. Eligibility and availability for this type of housing may vary by service member, family size and installation. Army Family Housing

Application

There are two types of Government Housing:

• Army Family Housing (AFH)
• General Flag Officers Quarters (GFOQ)

Applications for government-leased housing are made upon arrival at the Housing Services Office in Building 209, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. Advance applications are not accepted.  You will, however, be placed on the wait list for quarters effective the date you departed your last duty station. Service members must report to Housing within 48 hours of arrival in Belgium. A thorough in-processing briefing is provided on all aspects of housing to include, Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA), Army Family Housing (AFH), Private Rental Housing (PRH), Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA), Move in Housing Allowance (MIHA) and Centralized Furnishing Management Office (CFMO).

Availability

Army Family Housing locations around SHAPE include:

• Casteau Homes (Clos de la Meuliere): Located just outside the SHAPE compound, close to the Officers Club. These two-story houses include 14 three-bedroom units (about 1457 square feet) and 8 four-bedroom units (about 1678 square feet). All have two bathrooms, an attached garage, a shed and a fully equipped kitchen. These 22 units are available for the three- and four-bedroom requirement service members in the grades of E-1 through E-6.
• Lens Housing (Rue du Calvaire): Located within 13 kilometers of SHAPE and 5 kilometers from Chièvres. These duplexes consist of 4 four-bedroom units (1678 square feet) and 16 three-bedroom units (1457 square feet). All units have an attached garage and a shed for storage.
• Attre Housing (Rue de la Cailloutiere): Located within 16 kilometers of SHAPE and three kilometers from Chievres. These 20 two-story duplexes and standalone houses consist of 4 four-bedroom units (1678 square feet) and 16 three-bedroom units (1457 square feet). All units have an attached garage and a shed for storage.　

Unaccompanied housing (UH) is available at the Housing Services Office for single and unaccompanied personnel. Please call before making a permanent change of station to Belgium in order to arrange for a room in the barracks.

No Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA)  will be granted to unaccompanied E-1 through E-6 if a room is available in the barracks. If facilities are not available, a Certificate of Non-Availability (CNA) will be issued and must be obtained before seeking accommodations elsewhere. Service members should report to their respective elements for guidance.
