Home of the 27th Special Operations Wing (27th SOW), Cannon Air Force Base is named after General John Kenneth Cannon, a World War II Mediterranean combat commander and former chief of U. S. Air Forces in Europe. The missions of the wing include infiltration, exfiltration and re-supply of special operations forces; air refueling of special operations rotary wing and tiltrotor aircraft; and precision fire support. These capabilities support a variety of special operations missions including direct action, unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, personnel recovery, psychological operations and information operations.

Motorcycle Safety
DOD Instruction 6055.4 mandates the use of helmets by military members on or off base. In addition, the wearing of high contrast/reflective vests is also mandatory for all operators on base and all military personnel off base. Military must attend Motorcycle Safety Foundation Training Course AFI 91-207. Contact 27 SOW Safety for further information at 575-784-7233.
Pets in Government Housing
Air Force Guidance Memorandum has set the following mandatory pet policy. Residents may not board dogs or any breed (including a mixed breed) that are deemed "aggressive or potentially aggressive". These dogs are defined as a Pit Bull (American Staffordshire Bull Terrier or English Staffordshire Bull Terrier), Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Chow, and wolf hybrids. Housing residents already boarding pets prohibited by this policy may continue to board the pet until they terminate housing unless the pet demonstrates an aggressive behavior. Exotic animals such as reptiles, rodents (other than hamsters and guinea pigs), ferrets, hedgehogs, skunks, rats, raccoons, squirrels, pot bellied pigs, monkeys, arachnids, or any farm animals are not authorized in government housing.
Only two dogs, cats or 1 of each, are permitted per household in base housing and shall wear a collar or harness with current rabies and distemper vaccination tags attached. Cats and dogs are required to be licensed within Clovis city limits. If you obtain a pet after moving into government housing, you are required to register your pets with the housing office within 72 hours. Exceptional Family Member Program
Cannon AFB, Clovis and Portales NM are agriculturally based and located on high altitude desert with many medical specialists located within two hours or more away, which can impact dependents with special medical needs. Please see the “Exceptional Family Member Program” article in this installation booklet for a complete overview of the EFMP program. Contact your local EFMP-FS representative at your loosing base Military & Family Readiness Center or your medical Primary Care Manager for further information and planning.

Defense Service Network Dialing Instructions
The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included.
