If you’ve ever considered taking your education a step further, you should look to your installation for more information and assistance. They can help you decide if receiving an advanced degree is right for you, tell you which local colleges and classes are offered and find out if you’re eligible for tuition assistance. The Voluntary Education Center, or Installation Education Center, is available to help you put together a plan to advance your education.
Military spouses can also choose to engage with an education and career coach through the DoD’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, or SECO. These coaches can assist them in exploring multiple tools, resources and information to reach their educational goals. Many colleges offer classes that will fit into your schedule such as 8 to 10 week semesters and weekend programs. Contact the school of your choice for current class schedules and registration information or you may contact the Navy College Office for more detailed list of colleges, 833-330-6622 or visit the website NAVYCOLLEGE.NAVYL.MIL. Tidewater Community College (TCC)
The college grants two-year associate degrees and certificates in more than 100 programs of study. Included in the degree programs are liberal arts, business, computer information systems, science, engineering, and nursing. For more information, call 800-371-0898.
Navy College Center (NCC) (Pensacola, Florida)
Sailors have access to information through the NCC website, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additionally, Sailors can speak with an advisor from 6 a.m. – 9 p.m., Central Standard Time, seven days a week at DSN 922-1828 or toll free 877-253-7122. The NCC issues official SMART documents.
Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership (NCPDLP)
In response to Sailors’ need for greater access to higher education, Navy College has developed partnerships with colleges/universities to offer rating relevant degrees via distance learning to Sailors everywhere. These new education partnerships provide associates and bachelors degree programs relevant to each rating, and make maximum use of military professional training and experience to fulfill degree requirements. High School Completion Program
Active duty personnel may earn their high school diploma by taking day or evening courses. The Navy’s Tuition Assistance (TA) funds 100% of tuition and all books/materials are provided free.
Tuition Assistance (TA)
The Navy will fund up to 100% of tuition and required fees charged by an educational institution for course enrollment. There are limits, caps, and stipulations to utilize TA. Payment for tuition/fees will not exceed: $250 per semester hour, $166.67 per quarter hour, or $16.67 per clock hour. This is a fiscal year funding limit of 16 semester hours, 24 quarter hours, or 240 clock hours per individual per fiscal year.

DANTES Testing Program
Testing schedules and test list materials are available for active duty personnel at the Navy College Office on the following examinations: General Educational Development (GED) testing, undergraduate college admissions exams such as the SAT and ACT; Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) subject tests (reimbursement is available for the GRE general and GMAT exams), and college credit by examination tests such as CLEP, DSST, and Excelsior College Examinations.
DANTES Distance Learning Programs
Thousands of independent study courses are available from accredited institutions covering a broad range of academic and vocational disciplines at the high school, vocational/technical, undergraduate, and graduate levels.
SOCNAV
A network of two and four-year colleges and universities that is located on or near Navy installations worldwide. Most of these schools have a minimum residency requirement (25%) and offer maximum flexibility and transferability of college credits.
Navy College Program for Afloat College Education (NCPACE)
The NCPACE program provides tuition-free instructor and computer-delivered courses to shipboard personnel (Type 2 & 4 sea duty UIC’s). Courses range from academic skills to graduate level college courses. This is a command sponsored program. Contact your Education Services Officer (ESO) regarding course offerings.
SMART
Sailors receive a college transcript, referred to as the Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript, documenting recommended academic credit for Navy training and work experience. Request unofficial copies from the Navy College Office or download your personal copy from the Internet.
VETERANS’ AFFAIRS (VA) EDUCATION BENEFIT
The VA educational assistance is financial aid available for eligible active duty and veterans personnel to attend school. Veterans’ educational assistance is available primarily through the Post-Vietnam Era Veterans’ Educational Assistance (VEAP), the Montgomery GI Bill® (MGIB), or the Post 9/11 GI Bill®. For more information regarding your GI Bill® education benefits and transference of these benefits to family members, contact the VA at 1-888-GIBILL1 (888-442-4551) or online, or the VA office at the college or university you are attending or plan to attend.
The Navy College Program (NCP) provides opportunities for Sailors to earn college degrees by providing academic credit for Navy training, work experience, and off-duty education. The NCP mission is to enable Sailors to obtain a college degree while on active duty. The NCP integrates all components of Voluntary Education. While the NCP is primarily geared toward enlisted Sailors, some NCP components are also available to officers. The components include the following: Academic Advice (either through the Sailor’s servicing Navy College Office (NCO) or Navy College Center (NCC) in Pensacola; Academic Skills, either through the Navy College Learning Program (NCLP) or through the Navy College Learning Center (NCLC); Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) testing and independent study programs; Navy College Program for Afloat College Education (NCPACE); Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership Program (NCPDLP); Rating Roadmaps and Degree Roadmaps; Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART); service members Opportunity Colleges Navy (SOCNAV); and Tuition Assistance (TA).
