Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
There are no pet quarantines in Nebraska.Pet owners who reside off base must register and license their pets. The owner accomplishes this by taking the animal’s current vaccination records/certificates to the Nebraska Humane Society, online, emailing them at licensing@nehumanesociety.org or calling 402-444-7800. Both dogs and cats must have a current rabies vaccination.
Pet owners who reside on base (Rising View) also must register and license their pets. The owner accomplishes this by taking the animal’s current vaccination records/certificates to 403 Butler Blvd., Building 490 within 10 days of arrival if living in Rising View. You do not need an appointment and you don't need to bring your pet. Please call the Veterinary Treatment Facility at 402-294-6141 for further instructions on how to register and license your pet.
Additionally, Offutt Air Force Base and the surrounding communities have "leash laws" and enforce the maximum limit for the number of pets: two in base housing and three in Bellevue and the surrounding areas.
There are no pet quarantines specific to Nebraska.Arrange for your pet's transportation needs as soon as possible and with the same care and attention that you put into your family's travel plans.
If traveling by air, be sure to check with the different carriers and the Federal Aviation Administration before purchasing a kennel as airline rules vary by the type and size of the pet traveling. The time of year (temperatures) may also impact your pet's travel arrangements. You may consider sending your pet ahead by cargo plane or leaving your pet with friends or family until you move into your new home. Regardless of how your pet travels, it is always a good idea to have all documentation (vaccination records, microchip ID number) and identification (name, picture, physical description) easily accessible.Per The Joint Travel Regulations, service members may now be authorized reimbursement of up to $550 for a PCS within the continental United States and up to $2,000 for a PCS to or from a location outside the continental United States to cover expenses directly related to pet transportation. For more information, please refer to the JTR.
Make reservations for boarding your pet prior to arriving at Offutt AFB. The temporary lodging facility has four "pet friendly" units, but they are in high demand. Here are a few kennels located near the base:
