Programs and services are available at most installations for children up to age 12. Care may be provided in Child Development Centers, School Age Care Programs, and Family Child Care Homes. Please review the information to find out what programs and services are available at this installation. There are no Child Development Centers located on Torii Station, Okinawa. Child Care and before/after school care services are provided by the Air Force and the Marine Corps. Licensed Family Day Care is also available on Kadena Air Force Base, Foster, Kinser and Courtney Marine Corps Camps.

Child Development Centers
Three child development facilities on Kadena service children of active-duty military members and Department of Defense civilians. All three child development centers are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. NAEYC Accreditation meets the highest quality of Early Childhood Programs Standards and Accreditation Criteria.

The fees for all of the existing programs are calculated using a sliding scale based on total family income. Furthermore, the child development centers accept children from 6 weeks to 5 years old. There is a waiting list for child care, but the wait times vary depending on the time of year and age of the child. The Resource and Referral Coordinator can provide child care availability information if provided your specific information.

Family Child Care
A Family Child Care (FCC) home is a base provider, authorized by the Mission Support Group commander, to provide child care services to military families and civilians. The care offered by Kadena's licensed FCC providers is based on current knowledge of child development and early childhood education. Providers offer a nurturing home environment that supports each child's development in a family setting located in the Kadena AB community. The Family Child Care providers must follow stringent guidelines and is expected to undergo unscheduled inspections on a monthly basis.

FCC Subsidy Program - Offers full time care in a licensed FCC home at the same fees as the CDC/SAP. Weekly fees are determined by total family income.

School Age Program
The School Age Program also offers affordable, quality care during out-of-school time to facilitate youth development for children 5-12 years old from 5:45 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. These programs help meet the needs of both single and working parents. The program provides activities for children Kindergarten through 12 years of age while parents are at work during the before and after school hours. Conducted in classroom group settings, the School Age Program includes activities such as arts and crafts, outdoor activities and short field trips which are planned to stimulate and enhance the well-being of each individual youth.
Holiday Camp and Summer Camp are similar to the SAP but are conducted only during holidays and summer vacations. The programs provide a variety of day long activities such as swimming, bowling, arts and crafts, field trips and much more. The programs begin the first day of the school break and continue through the last day of the vacation.
This program is accredited by the National Afterschool Association to meet the highest standards of care. The fees are calculated using a sliding scale based on total family income. Another option is child care centers off base. Expect to pay more for Montessori schools or day care centers that offer an educational curriculum.
Marine Corps Child Care Services
The Child Development Center offers facility based quality full-day, part-day, and hourly care programs for children 6 weeks to 5 years old. These programs, staffed by trained care giving professionals, meet accreditation standards of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. All centers operate from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Part time care is offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5 a.m.

Home-based childcare options in addition to center based programs. Offers full-day, part day, Part-time mornings, hourly, deployment, before & after school, overnight, weekend and holiday care for children 4 weeks to 12 years of age. FCC home providers are certified by the installation. Prior to certification, all providers and their family members must pass a series of background checks and participate in a comprehensive Early Childhood Education training program. This program also offers subsidy to patrons with children under 3 years of age that work non-traditional hours or have children with special needs.

School Age Care
Available care for children 5 - 12 yr. who are enrolled in kindergarten through 6th grade during duty hours before & after school, teacher in-service day, and vacation periods. SAC provides a safe, supervised, healthy, age-appropriate environment while parents are at work. Programs are available at Camp Foster, Camp Kinser and Mc Tureous.
