Deployment can be a challenging phase of the military lifecycle, but it’s important to know that you don’t have to go through it alone. The military provides a variety of resources and support programs — ranging from educational briefings to morale calls — for your loved ones, children and service members to ease the stress of deployment. Military members may be assigned to a specific installation but support may come from local communities, Yellow Ribbon events or the installation itself.
If you are married and unaccompanied, you must start making arrangements for you and your family during your assignment to Okinawa. Your sponsor will be helpful to you in utilizing this resource. Army Community Service and other base support agencies will do their part at your end. Deal with stress on you and the family up front and problems encountered later will seem less urgent. Don't try and do it alone, use the base and community resources at your disposal. They're there to make your relocation as smooth and painless as possible for both you and your family. Being organized is a great way to start.
If your family will join you later, if possible, make travel arrangements prior to your departure. The transportation office can help you with the logistics of getting your family to Okinawa. You can reach them at DSN 315-652-4357 or off base at 098-962-4357.
With the exception of those assigned to the 1/1 Special Forces Group, service members assigned to Okinawa very seldom deploy as a unit. However, occasionally, individuals will be selected for deployment in support of the various operations currently in place. If you are married and unaccompanied, you must start making arrangements for you and your family during your assignment to Okinawa. Setting up two separate households, banking arrangements, allotments, communications, transportation and just about every other aspect of your life together must be looked at and sorted out. If you have children, don't forget their needs. Service members in Okinawa have, at their disposal, a variety of support services that can greatly alleviate the stress associated with deployment and relocation. The ACS on Torii Station provides briefings, workshops and symposiums on family unification issues. Additionally, the ACS provides family assistance plans that address all levels and phases of mobility, deployment, stability and support operations. Unit family readiness groups are also very valuable in that they assist, with the help of the ACS, in areas of training, gathering resource materials, organizing homecoming and reunion planning. Contact the ACS at DSN via 315-652-4357 or off base at 098-962-4357.
