In 1983, Congress approved the Navy's Strategic Homeport Initiative to build additional bases and disperse the fleet from existing concentration areas. Everett, Washington was selected in 1984 as the ideal location to homeport a battle group, followed by the official groundbreaking on November 9, 1987.

The installation became operational after its dedication on April 8, 1994, when personnel from the former Naval Station Puget Sound in Sand Point began transitioning to Naval Station Everett's new facilities.

The Navy acquired a second 52-acre site to locate community support facilities in Marysville. The Smokey Point Family Support Complex was dedicated on August 25, 1995. Its completion marked the final transition of tenant commands from Naval Station Puget Sound to Everett.

Among the first ships to be assigned to Everett were the frigates USS Ingraham and USS Ford in 1994. The destroyers USS Paul F. Foster, USS David R. Ray, USS Callaghan, and USS Chandler arrived during the next few years, from 1994-1996. To complete the first battle group, the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln made a change of homeport from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton to Everett on January 8, 1997.

Everett is the county seat of and the largest city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. It is located 25 miles north of Seattle and is one of the main cities in the Seattle metropolitan area and Puget Sound region. It is the 7th largest city in the state. Snohomish County is bordered by King County to the south & Skagit County to the north in the western region of Washington. With an estimated population of 113,011 as of 2024, it is the third-most populous county in Washington (after nearby King and Pierce counties) and is the 72nd-most populous in the United States.

There are about 6,000 Sailors and Civil Service personnel assigned to commands located at Naval Station Everett. The Naval Station itself has about 350 Sailors and Civilians assigned. 

Naval Station Everett (NSE) is located 29 miles north of Seattle and nestled between the sparkling blue waters of Puget Sound and the rugged, snow-capped peaks of the Cascades. Ideally situated for exploring the entire Pacific Northwest, a little under 100 miles south of Vancouver, Canada, and a short ferry ride from the San Juan Islands or Olympic Peninsula. We have some of the most spectacularly beautiful scenery, forests, and mountain wildlife sanctuaries in the United States with unlimited opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Naval Station Everett's close proximity to Seattle offers service members and their families an opportunity to visit Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square, and the world-famous Seattle Space Needle. Along with supporting our professional sporting teams: Mariners, Seahawks, Kraken, Sounders and Storm.

Eleven miles north of NSE is the Navy Support Complex in Smokey Point, where you will find the Commissary, Navy Exchange, Navy Federal Credit Union, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, and the Navy Lodge.

Driving directions, heading north (on Interstate 5):

• Take exit 192 off I-5 and merge onto Broadway.
• Turn left onto Everett Avenue.
• Turn right onto West Marine View Drive.
• Continue north over the viaduct.
• Naval Station Everett’s main gate is on the left.

Driving directions, heading south (on Interstate 5):

• Take exit 198, (Highway 529) off I-5. 
• After crossing the Snohomish River Bridge, take the first right.
• Turn left at the light onto West Marine View Drive.
• Continue on West Marine View Drive. Naval Station Everett’s main gate will be on the right.

• Head north on West Marine View Drive toward 14th Street.
• Turn slight right to merge onto Washington-529.
• Take the ramp on the left onto Interstate-5 North.
• Take Exit-202 for 116th Street Northeast.

Driving directions from Seattle to the Smokey Point Complex (heading North on Interstate 5):

• Take I-5 north to exit 202 and turn right (east).
• Turn right at 116th Street Northeast.
• Turn left at Smokey Point Boulevard/State Avenue.
• Turn right at 136th Street Northeast.
• Turn right at 45th Avenue Northeast.
• Turn left on to State Avenue
• Following it to 136^th street, turn right. 
• Follow 136^th street ½ mile and turn left on to 45^th Ave NE.
• Smokey Point Complex will be on your left.

Driving directions from Bellingham (heading South on Interstate 5):

• Take I-5 south to exit 206.
• Turn left and follow to Smokey Point Blvd.
• Turn right onto Smokey Point Blvd.
• Proceed 2 miles to 136^th street, turn left.
• Follow 136^th street ½ mile and turn left on to 45^th Ave NE.
• Smokey Point Complex will be on your left.
