Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
Kennels are not available on Joint Base Andrews, and pets are not allowed in billeting. You must make pet boarding arrangements prior to your arrival. There are a multitude of pet boarding facilities available in the Prince George's County and Charles County areas. Charges are subject to change. Contact the facility to find out current fees.
Pet Licensing/Immunization Requirements
All dogs and cats in the Metropolitan Area are required to be immunized against rabies and registered annually. Those dogs and cats housed off base must be registered with the city/county at the animal regulation and disease control center for a nominal fee. Those animals on-base should be registered with the Joint Base Andrews veterinary treatment facility within five working days of their arrival (Phone: 240-857-2651, Address: 1781 Arnold Ave., Joint Base Andrews, MD 20762). Proof of rabies immunizations within the last year is required of all dogs and cats over three months of age. Registration and immunization are required yearly. If your animals were not vaccinated by the Andrews vet, bring the certificate of rabies vaccination to the VTF facility for registration and/or updating of their records.
Pit Bulls
By Joint Base Andrews regulation and housing policy, all pit bull/pit bull mix dogs are banned from Joint Base Andrews housing. This information is published on the base housing website and members found in violation of these regulations have had Uniform Code of Military Justice action taken against them by the command as well as been evicted from base housing. Please see the Liberty Park website or the Joint Base Andrews housing office site at https://www.housing.af.mil/Home/Units/Joint-Base-Andrews/ for more information.
Furthermore, all pit bull dogs born after Feb. 3, 1997 are banned from Prince George's County, MD, the county in Maryland where Joint Base Andrews is located. Members residing in Prince George's County with a pre-ban animal (born before Feb. 3, 1997) must be able to prove to the satisfaction of county officials the date of birth of the animal. Additionally, many surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia ban these animals and the District of Columbia has proposed a ban on these animals. Joint Base Andrews veterinary services will not vaccinate or treat an animal banned at Joint Base Andrews or by Prince George's County.
