Library programs differ by branch of service. You may have access to things like tutoring, educational courses, online programs and a variety of print and electronic materials. Hours, contact information and closings can be found here or by calling your installation’s library.
The Navy General Library Program provides sailors with a way to further their professional and voluntary educational pursuits and leisure activities with digital library resources through the Navy Digital Library and the Ashore and Afloat Library Program. The Ashore and Afloat Library Program also provides leisure reading materials in print and audio formats. Access to an array of information sources and leisure materials is available 24/7, worldwide. The digital resources on Navy Digital Library include eBooks (OverDrive, Tumblebooks, RB Digital), downloadable audiobooks, genealogy databases (Ancestry.com), a financial database (Morningstar) and newspapers. The digital library also includes 5,000 full-text journals and magazines, DSST and CLEP test preparation materials, popular magazines and do-it-yourself databases.
Ashore libraries are located on 27 naval installations and provide a variety of print and audiovisual materials for checkout to eligible customers. The libraries provide access to the internet through computers and wireless at no charge. Most installation libraries conduct special programs, such as story hours and summer reading programs, classes, and book clubs, as well as author and book talks.
Afloat libraries include collections of print and audiovisual materials but they vary in size depending on the type of vessel. At one end of the spectrum is a carrier, which may have a collection as large as 15,000 volumes. At the other end, a submarine may have a collection of only a few hundred items. Monthly shipments of paperback books are provided to the fleet. As a part of the Afloat Library Program, the Navy General Library Program provides an "opening day" collection for every new ship entering the Navy's active fleet.
The Naval Base Guam Library is located in the SB1 Building and offers free internet and monthly activities for children. The library is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Closed Sunday, Monday and holidays. Call 671-564-1836 for more information.
