When planning for a move with the military, you might consider moving into government housing. Government housing is owned and maintained by the Department of Defense and is typically on the installation. Eligibility and availability for this type of housing may vary by service member, family size and installation. Learn more about the different options, benefits and discounts that may be available to you through government housing.
Assignment Policy
As of Jan. 1 2011, all incoming officer and enlisted personnel on accompanied tours have the option to reside on-base in family housing or to secure a private lease on the economy. If personnel desire to reside in family housing but quarters are not available for your rank and family composition upon arrival, personnel will be placed on a waiting list and be provided a government-funded move from their off-base residence to family housing when a unit becomes available.
On-base family housing units are currently undergoing a multiyear renovation project. As a result of this renovation, on-base family housing may not be available for all incoming personnel. Personnel are encouraged to contact housing before you arrive to check on the current availability of family housing. Contacting us before you arrive is a good way to get information on off-base housing.
Housing Sites
On-base homes are limited due to several renovation projects. The Las Palmeras site contains 421 two, three and four-bedroom homes for officers and enlisted personnel. These homes are single story units constructed in the "Spanish Style." The majority of the Las Palmeras homes are referred to as duplex units simply because they share a common wall at the carport making them seem more like single family detached homes. Built in the early 1960's, these homes have undergone various renovation and improvement projects. The homes in this neighborhood come equipped with electric ranges, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers. Each home has central heat and air conditioning as well as cable connections for the on-base Armed Forces Network satellite service. Phone connections are also provided. All homes have exterior storage areas and fenced backyards. Additionally, there are no facilities aboard the Naval Station Rota for storing excess furnishings.
Pets
There is a limit of two pets in family housing (cats/dogs). Be aware that Spain has a law regarding dangerous dogs. Contact your sponsor or the Naval Station Rota Veterinary Clinic for details and requirements for bringing dangerous dogs into Spain.
Waitlist
An on-base family housing application may be submitted at the Housing Service Center or before arrival using the Housing Early Application Tool application, which can be found at http://www.cnic.navy.mil/HEAT. HEAT allows the HSC to place the service member on the waiting list. HEAT does not give priority on the waiting list. If an application is submitted within 30 days of arriving, the member's effective date on the waiting list is the date of detachment from the last permanent duty station. Applicants need to be confirmed upon arrival. Applications are available at the HSC and must be submitted with a copy of the PCS orders, detaching endorsement and a copy of the record of emergency data (Page 2) and command sponsorship (Page 13). We encourage you to contact us before you arrive to check on the current availability of family housing. Calling us before you arrive is also a good way to get answers about off-base housing as well.
Members living in unaccompanied housing are required to report to the Housing Welcome Center. Barracks indoctrination will be held every Friday at 9 a.m.
The UH facilities are centrally located in the Industrial section of Naval Station Rota within easy walking distance to MWR, NEX/Defense Commissary Agency, U.S. Naval Hospital, Galley and personnel support detachment facilities. Military personnel in pay grades E4 and below on unaccompanied orders are required to live in the UH upon arrival to Naval Station Rota. If accommodations are not available, E4 and below personnel will be authorized to obtain an off-base lease. Prior to obtaining an off-base lease, E4 and below personnel are required to complete a financial planning worksheet with their command financial specialist and provide a Page 13 to the Housing Office to verify financial counseling has been completed. If UH becomes available, E4 and below personnel residing in an off-base lease may be required to relocate to the UH. This move would be a government-funded move.
