Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
On Base
Personnel residing on Scott AFB are required to register their pet with the Scott AFB Veterinary Treatment Facility within 14 days of arrival on base (with a limit to 2 four-legged pets per housing regulation).
Pit Bulls and Pit Bull breeds are not allowed to live on SAFB. Pit Bulls and Pit Bull breeds ARE authorized services at the Scott AFB VTF.
There is no fee to register an animal on base, and you are not required to utilize the Scott AFB VTF for your pet’s veterinary care. However, you must provide updated immunization records to the clinic upon registration AND continue to send updated records when your pet gets any immunizations at an off-post clinic while you reside on base.
We highly recommend microchipping your pet. Microchip identification is the most reliable way to reunite lost pets with their owners. Additionally, Members traveling OCONUS must have their cats and dogs microchipped to meet pet importation requirements. Microchipping services are available at Scott AFB VTF, and owners should update their contact information with the microchip registry with each PCS.
Off-Base Residents of St. Clair County, IL are required to register their pets with St. Clair County Animal Services. Proof of current rabies vaccination must be provided at the time of registration, for all dogs and cats over 4 months of age. Most veterinarians/kennels will have the registration form available for you. For more information about fees and time limits for registration, call 618-235-0585. There you can also obtain the most current information about animal ordinances in St. Clair County.
Contact your airline to confirm their specific pet‑travel requirements or reach out to the Personal Property Office at 618‑256‑1201 or 375LRS.ScottAFB.personalproperty@us.af.mil for guidance.
There are no boarding or kenneling facilities on Scott AFB, however the Scott Inn does have a limited number of pet-friendly temporary lodging facility units available for an additional $10 per night fee. A copy of the pet's immunization records are required at check-in. Additional rules must be followed while utilizing these pet-friendly units. Call the Scott Inn for more details and limitations. If on-base TLF with your pet is not an option, a number of quality boarding facilities are available in the surrounding community.
A list of local boarding facilities is available from the lodging front desk or you may consult the Internet. Call 618-256-1844 for a faxed copy of the list or ask your sponsor to pick up a copy. Pet owners are highly encouraged to hand-carry their pet's medical and immunization records with them for verification purposes or in case of an emergency.
