A variety of federal, defense contract and private organization employment opportunities are available within USAG-Italy. An individual’s specific situation, level of persistence and flexibility greatly influence job search success.
Department of War rules state that overseas employment is limited to a total of five years: a three-year initial tour and a possible two-year extension.
The Status of Forces Agreement prohibits non-European Union personnel (i.e. military family members, U.S. military personnel, etc.) from working on the Italian economy. Further, such employment would render those persons "ordinary resident" status, prohibiting them from employment with the U.S. forces in Italy and excluding them from other SOFA privileges.

Information and requirements on becoming a Department of War Dependents Schools teacher and educator online applications are found on the Department of War Education Activities website. Those interested in employment with DoWEA as local substitute teachers or administrative, educational, or library aides may obtain more information on USAJOBS. The Army Transition Assistance Program is mandated by the Department of War and provides information and training to ensure transitioning soldiers, Department of the Army civilians, military retirees, veterans, soldiers’ family members and caregivers are prepared for their next step in life when leaving the Army — whether finding a job in the public or private sector, pursuing additional education or starting their own business. TAP helps assist eligible personnel make informed decisions through benefits counseling, career preparation and employment assistance to provide a successful transition.
Army Emergency Relief
The Spouse Education Assistance Program, which is offered through Army Emergency Relief, is a secondary mission to help Army families with the cost of post-secondary, undergraduate-level education and vocational training for dependent spouses. The program provides spouses residing with active-duty soldiers with financial assistance in pursuing educational goals.
The Maj. Gen. James Ursano Scholarship Fund administered by AER is a secondary mission to help army families with the cost of post-secondary undergraduate-level education, vocational training and preparation for acceptance by service academies for their dependent children.
