A variety of federal, defense contract, and private organization employment opportunities are available within USAG-Italy. An individual’s specific situation, level of persistence, and flexibility greatly influence job search success.

Department of Defense rules state that overseas employment is limited to a total of five years: a three-year initial tour and a possible two-year extension.

The Status of Forces Agreement prohibits non-European Union personnel (i.e. military family members, U.S. military personnel, etc.) from working on the Italian economy. Further, such employment would render those persons "ordinary resident" status, prohibiting them from employment with the U.S. forces in Italy and excluding them from other SOFA privileges.

Information and requirements on becoming a Department of Defense Dependents Schools teacher and educator online applications are found on the Department of Defense Education Activities website. Those interested in employment with DoDEA as local substitute teachers or administrative, educational, or library aides may obtain more information on USAJOBS. Teaching applications may be submitted through the DoDEA Employment Application System.

Army and Air Force Exchange Service’s serves the USAG-Italy community with tax-free goods, food, and services, providing many of your favorite products and restaurants on the installation. Application procedures and employment opportunities for US citizens and local nationals are published on applymyexchange.com.

Military and civilian spouses should hand-carry employment-related documents to be ready to apply for positions upon arrival:

• Passports and/or visas
• Professional licenses/certifications
• College transcripts (required for some jobs)
• Latest SF-50 (for in-service applicants)
• Leave Without Pay statement
• DD Form 214 (if prior military)
• Marriage license.
   

Family members are encouraged to make full use of the Employment Readiness Program to find local employment opportunities, receive career assistance, or create/update an effective job resume. It is now more vital than ever for job applicants in Europe to take special care in the preparation of their resumes. Workshops and individual consultations are offered.

The Soldier for Life program (formerly the Transition Assistance Program and the Army Career and Alumni Program) enables Soldiers to capitalize on their Army experience and skills. Soldiers make informed decisions using transition program and re-enlistment may be a viable option.

Army Emergency Relief

The Spouse Education Assistance Program, which is offered through Army Emergency Relief, is a secondary mission to help Army families with the cost of post-secondary, undergraduate-level education and vocational training for dependent spouses. The program provides spouses residing with active-duty soldiers in Europe, Korea, Japan and Okinawa commands only with financial assistance in pursuing educational goals.

The Maj. Gen. James Ursano Scholarship Fund administered by AER is a secondary mission to help army families with the cost of post-secondary undergraduate-level education, vocational training and preparation for acceptance by service academies for their dependent children.
