When you move, TRICARE moves with you. No matter where you go in the world, TRICARE is there before, during and when you get to your next duty station.
There are steps you need to take to make sure changes to your TRICARE coverage go smoothly. Understand that when you move, you may have to use a different TRICARE option. Visit TRICARE Moving to learn more.
Before you move, you should take care of any routine medical needs, including immunizations, and fill your prescriptions so you have enough while traveling. If you need care during your move, visit TRICARE Getting Care When Traveling to learn what to do.
Filling prescriptions while traveling
You should refill prescriptions before traveling. But if you run out of a prescription drug while traveling, visit TRICARE Filling Prescriptions When Traveling.
Getting dental care while traveling
Getting dental care while traveling depends on your location and whether you are a service member or family member.
With permanent change of station orders, ask for a copy of your medical and dental records from your military treatment facility and the dental treatment facility. Do this at least one month before your PCS date. The MTF should also transfer a copy of your record and any family records to your new duty station or you may be able to hand carry them to your new duty station.
If you want someone else to be able to get medical or dental information on you or your family while you are moving, you need to complete a DD Form 2870, "Authorization for Disclosure of Medical or Dental Information."
For more information on getting copies of medical records, visit TRICARE Request Copies of Medical Records.
Stuttgart Health and Dental Clinic
A briefing by representatives of the Stuttgart Medical Treatment Facility Health Clinic and Dental Clinic are part of initial in-processing through the Central Processing Facility. At that time, each representative will collect all files for the service member and family members, initiate enrollment for TRICARE Europe and provide orientation to receive authorization of over the counter medications. The Health Clinic is located on Patch Barracks and the Dental Clinic is located on Panzer.
U.S. Army Hospital Landstuhl
U.S. Army Hospital Landstuhl is located approximately three hours from Stuttgart. It is the only facility in Europe that offers inpatient and emergency services. Specialty services are offered by referral from the Stuttgart Health Clinic.
Local Community Information
There may be occasions when you might need to use the German health care system, such as emergency medical care and specialty care by referral from a Stuttgart Health Clinic physician. The German health care system is a quality system with highly trained providers. We have established relationships with a select group of providers in the area who have had their credentials verified and have agreed to file Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services claims on behalf of our patients.
All obstetric care is provided in Stuttgart by a German obstetrician. A tour of the four local hospitals used by the Stuttgart military community is offered during initial in-processing through the central processing facility.
Although most medical specialties you will need are available in the community, some sub-specialty care may not be available. The 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Ramstein Air Base (approximately two hours from Stuttgart) serves as the principal hub for aeromedical evacuation in Europe. In addition, there are regularly scheduled flights to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland from Ramstein for patients requiring care in the United States. All aeromedical requirements will be arranged through the Stuttgart Health Clinic.
