When planning for a move with the military, you might consider moving into government housing. Government housing is owned and maintained by the Department of Defense and is typically on the installation. Eligibility and availability for this type of housing may vary by service member, family size and installation. Learn more about the different options, benefits and discounts that may be available to you through government housing.
Upon arrival in Stuttgart, you will visit the Housing Office after initial in-processing at the Central Processing Facility on Panzer Kaserne, Building 2913. The Housing Office is also located Building 2913, on the second floor.
Availability
Quarters available at Stuttgart include two-, three- and four-bedroom units. There are a limited number of five-bedroom units for very large families. Field grade, company grade, senior and junior enlisted housing is in multifamily apartment buildings known locally as "stairwells."
Normally, there are nine to 12 dwelling units that share two to three common stairwell entrances and outdoor areas. Apartments have limited space for large furniture. Bedrooms in Army Family Housing are typically smaller than those in the U.S. Arranging your bedroom furniture may prove difficult, especially if you have a king-size bed, triple dresser, large chest of drawers and/or a wardrobe.
Typical apartments have a living room/dining room combination with most having a window opening from the kitchen to the dining area. Kitchens are generally small, with no room for a kitchen table. It is recommended not to bring large furniture to these small stairwell apartments. Do not expect to receive extra bedrooms than your rank/family size allotment in Stuttgart.
Quarters are equipped with dishwashers and have a washer and dryer. None of the quarters have air conditioning or garbage disposals. All quarters have an assigned uncovered parking space.
Eligibility
The following personnel are eligible for on-post housing in Stuttgart:
Bedroom Entitlement
The following is an explanation of the number of bedrooms each family is eligible for:
There are a limited number of on-post bachelor officers quarters and senior enlisted bachelor quarters for single E-7s and above. Single service members in grades of E-6 and below must reside in barracks, if available.
Those personnel in grades E-7 and above drawing BAQ at the “without dependent” rate are authorized to reside off post. For those desiring to live on post, applications will be considered on a space-available basis.
Bachelor officers quarters and senior enlisted bachelor quarters are located on Panzer Kaserne, in Kelley Barracks and Robinson Barracks.
Government Storage
Government storage is not available, and there are a limited number of storage/mini warehouses to rent. Storage space is generally limited to a small built-in area or storage room in the basement of the building. Some buildings have enclosed storage rooms in the attic or basement. Typically, each Army Family Housing apartment has an enclosed storage room assigned. The storage room is about 4½ feet by 10 feet.
Assignment of Quarters
You can expect a delay in receiving permanent quarters. When there is a waiting list, apartments are offered to the first person on the waiting list the day the unit is ready for occupancy. Should the service member be on temporary duty assignment or temporary duty travel, the offer may be made to the spouse. In all cases, a decision to accept or decline the unit must be provided to the Housing Office within one working day (24 hours) of notification. Declining adequate government quarters may subject you to the discontinuance of your Temporary Lodging Allowance.
