Child Youth Services - Youth Programs
STEAM Club
STEAM - Science & Technology interpreted through Engineering & the Arts, all based in Mathematical elements as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. We strive to incorporate these principles into our 5 service areas of Academic & Career Development, The Arts, Character & Leadership Development, Sports, Rec. & Fitness, and Health, Wellness & Life Skills. STEAM Youth Center offerings vary from month to month based on youth interest and inquiry. The Youth Center has a staff member dedicated to developing a STEAM and homework help program and gains youth input for club ideas and activities.
Power Hour
Provides youth with the support, resources and guidance necessary to complete their homework and start the school day with a sense of confidence and ability. Youth earn Power Points for completion of homework and other educational activities. Youth also earn points for good grades on homework and tests. These points may be redeemed for prizes, activities and incentives as do participating in our other program offerings.
Youth of the Year
Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club members. Each year, one exceptional young person from a Boys & Girls Club rises to the role of National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year serves as both an exemplary ambassador for Boys & Girls Club youth and as a strong voice for all of our nation’s young people.
The journey to being named National Youth of the Year begins locally and progresses to state, regional and national levels, with an additional military phase for members of BGCA-affiliated Youth Centers on U.S. military installations.
Torch Club
Torch Clubs are chartered small-group leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 10-13. A Torch Club is a powerful vehicle through which Club staff can help meet the special character development needs of younger adolescents at a critical stage in their development. Torch Club members learn to elect officers and work together to implement activities in four areas: service to Club and community, education, health and fitness and social recreation. The Torch Club Awards are presented annually to Torch Clubs with outstanding programs and activities in the four areas. Each year, Torch Club members from all over the country take part in a service-learning experience through the National Torch Club Project.
Keystone Club
Keystoning is the Boys & Girls Club Movement’s most dynamic teen program. It affords teens an opportunity to gain valuable leadership and service experience. Teens conduct activities in four areas: academic success, career exploration, community service, and teen outreach. Aaron's Inc. sponsors the Keystone Club program as part of a multi-year teen initiative; a strategic partnership between Aaron's Inc. and BGCA provides Clubs with the tools and resources to create a positive place for teens as well as for kids.
Smart Girls
A health, fitness, prevention/education program for girls, ages 10-15. Healthy attitudes and lifestyles are encouraged to enable early adolescent girls to develop to their full potential.
National Fine Arts Exhibit
This competition, which encourages creativity through a variety of media, is made up of local, regional and national exhibits. Young people are encouraged to create artwork in any of the following categories: monochromatic drawing, multicolored drawing, pastels, water color, oil or acrylic paint, print making, mixed media, collage and sculpture.
4-H Club
The 4H program provides learning opportunities for young people to develop skills within the project areas of science, health, agriculture, and civic engagement. Regular visits from guest speakers cover areas such as Red Ribbon Week: Drug and Alcohol Abuse Awareness, Resiliency, Sewing Projects, Computer Science and STEM activities, and more.
Character Counts
Good character is not hereditary or automatic, but must be developed. Character Counts is a nationally recognized character education system built on Six Pillars: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. MS/T incorporates this methodology consistently in daily interactions with youth. Character Counts has a positive impact on attitudes and behaviors giving young people the opportunity to become productive, caring and responsible citizens.
Triple Play
Programs to improve youth’s knowledge of healthy habits, good nutrition and physical fitness, increase the number of hours per day they participate in physical activities, and strengthen their ability to interact positively with others and engage in healthy relationships. Programs include daily challenges, sports clubs, sports leadership camps, Triple Play games, Healthy Habits Nutrition Curriculum and social recreation.
Youth Sponsorship
The sponsorship program is designed to help newly arriving youth become familiar with the West Point community, schools, local towns, and the surrounding region. Tours, monthly Hail and Farewell parties and other special events are just a few examples of the ways for our youth to participate, meet new people, and do exciting activities. Youth sponsors are trained to help incoming youth adjust to their new community and make the transition to a new school and community easier.
Culinary Club
Youth learn basic cooking skills and health and nutrition in weekly hands-on cooking sessions. Emphasis on fun, healthy choices/substitutions, safety and proper etiquette are also inherent in every planned lesson. Youth also get the chance to compete in cooking competitions and choose what they wish to learn how to cook. *Under COVID policies, culinary club has been on hold.
Workforce Preparation
Youth learn resume building, interview skills, financial readiness, communication, dressing for success, and many other important and relevant skills that will get them ready to join the workforce. Guest speakers come in regularly to speak on careers. Open to grades 6-12, with sessions designed to cover a broad range of ages and interests.
