When you move, TRICARE moves with you. No matter where you go in the world, TRICARE is there before, during and when you get to your next duty station.
There are steps you need to take to make sure changes to your TRICARE coverage go smoothly. Understand that when you move, you may have to use a different TRICARE option. Visit TRICARE Moving to learn more.
Before you move, you should take care of any routine medical needs, including immunizations, and fill your prescriptions so you have enough while traveling. If you need care during your move, visit TRICARE Getting Care When Traveling to learn what to do.
Filling prescriptions while traveling
You should refill prescriptions before traveling. But if you run out of a prescription drug while traveling, visit TRICARE Filling Prescriptions When Traveling.
Getting dental care while traveling
Getting dental care while traveling depends on your location and whether you are a service member or family member.
With permanent change of station orders, ask for a copy of your medical and dental records from your military treatment facility and the dental treatment facility. Do this at least one month before your PCS date. The MTF should also transfer a copy of your record and any family records to your new duty station or you may be able to hand carry them to your new duty station.
If you want someone else to be able to get medical or dental information on you or your family while you are moving, you need to complete a DD Form 2870, "Authorization for Disclosure of Medical or Dental Information."
For more information on getting copies of medical records, visit TRICARE Request Copies of Medical Records.

TRICARE pays after your other health insurance (OHI) (except for Medicaid, TRICARE supplements, the Indian Health Service, and others). To minimize out-of-pocket costs, fill prescriptions at a TRICARE retail network pharmacy that your OHI also covers. TRICARE Pharmacy Options
Care Along the Way
Military Treatment Facility Pharmacies
Most MTF pharmacies accept prescriptions written by both civilian and military providers, regardless of whether you are enrolled at the MTF. Non-formulary medications generally are not available at MTF pharmacies. To check the availability of a particular drug, contact the nearest MTF pharmacy in person or by phone. Visit the pharmacy website for more information on MTF pharmacies.
TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery
TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery is your least expensive option when not using an MTF pharmacy. Home delivery is best suited for medications you take on a regular basis. You may receive up to a 90-day supply of medications for minimal out-of-pocket costs.
TRICARE Retail Network Pharmacies
Another option for filling your prescriptions is through a TRICARE retail network pharmacy. You may fill prescriptions (one copayment for each 30-day supply) when you present your written prescription along with your uniformed services ID card to the pharmacist. This option allows you to fill your prescriptions at network pharmacies across the country without having to submit a claim. You have access to a network of more than 60,000 retail pharmacies in the United States and its territories (including Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands).
Non-Network Retail Pharmacies
At non-network retail pharmacies, you will pay full price for your medication and file a claim for reimbursement. Reimbursements are subject to deductible or out-of-network cost-shares and TRICARE-required copayments. All deductibles must be met before any reimbursement can be made.
1. Approval is required for active duty service members (ADSMs). Non-formulary drugs may be obtained free of charge by ADSMs only if medical necessity has been established. All other beneficiaries will pay the copayments listed above. Medical necessity information should be submitted along with the prescriptions.
The Department of Defense Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee may set quantity limits on some medications. For more information, visit their website.
2. Non-formulary drugs are generally not available at MTFs.
3. The non-formulary copayment applies unless medical necessity is established.
