With certain military moves, you may find yourself looking for housing that’s a little less permanent before making long-term arrangements. There are several temporary housing options that may be right for you. Explore the information about temporary housing facilities including allowances, lodging rates and eligibility.
The OCONUS Temporary Lodging Allowance is intended to partially pay a service member for higher-than-normal expenses incurred by a service member or command sponsored dependent while occupying temporary lodging outside of the continental United States. OCONUS TLA is available when it’s necessary for a service member or dependent to occupy temporary lodging upon arrival at, or immediately before leaving, a permanent duty station outside of the continental United States. Personal inconvenience of a service member or dependent is never a determining factor. TLA is not intended and must not be used for the personal enrichment of a service member including authorization of Temporary Lodging Allowance Special.
Eligibility for arriving service members depends on:
TLA is not authorized when:
Termination of Temporary Lodging Allowance
What else is there to know?
Where can I find more information on TLA?
DoDFMR Vol 7A (CH 68) and AE 37-4.
Can you be on TLA while on leave?
Yes. If the member is on leave in the permanent duty station area while looking for housing, TLA is payable. Temporary Lodging Allowance is not allowed for any day a service member is away from the PDS vicinity on leave or permissive travel, except when one or more dependents remain in the permanent duty station vicinity.
Can service members get a Temporary Lodging Allowance extension?
Yes, however, TLA extensions will not be automatically authorized. Justifications are based on circumstances beyond the service members control such as non-arrival of Household Goods/loaner furniture and being temporary duty or deployed during current TLA period. All extension requests are submitted to the housing office for review before going to USAREUR-AF for approval. Requests must be submitted before the end of the current Temporary Lodging Allowance period to allow time for processing.
What does "aggressively seeking housing' mean?
AE 37-4 defines aggressively seeking housing as actively searching for housing offers. This includes pursuing housing management office referrals as well as available advertisements. The minimum number of documented visits required to secure permanent housing for each 15-day period of TLA reimbursement is as follows:
Service members must provide the housing officer a list of private rentals visited during each 15-day period. The list should include reasons for nonacceptance and must be certified by the housing officer. The list will be used to justify continuation of TLA for the next 15-day period.
Service members who do not comply and cannot provide an acceptable reason for their efforts being deficient will lose their TLA authorization.
