It’s likely that employment will change when a move occurs, especially for military spouses. The information below will provide you with employment assistance information and resources available such as SECO, MyCAA and MSEP Portals.
For individual employment assistance for job opportunities on the installation and in the local community, contact the Langley Airman and Family Readiness Center or the Fort Eustis Army Community Service. The A&FRC and ACS provide resume assistance, employment resources, internet access and assistance and resource libraries. Classes are provided to assist with resumes and the federal job search. Individual appointments are available to assess needs, develop strategies and provide resources and referrals.
Access the following websites for employment opportunities on the installation: USAJOBS website (for federal civil service and non-appropriated fund jobs), Army Air Force Exchange Service and the Commissary.
Military spouses should be sure to ask about spouse preferences for federal positions.
For information on the local job market, unemployment rates and job search resources, you can access the Virginia Employment Commission. It is an outstanding local resource.
Remember to hand carry all your employment records, resumes, SF 50, latest performance appraisal, transcripts, certificates and licenses as you relocate so that you can begin the job search process as possible.
My Career Advancement Account
The military spouse My Career Advancement Account program – MyCAA, which is implemented by the Department of Defense, provides resources and assistance to spouses of active-duty services members, guard and reserve in pay grades E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2, with a spouse on orders for one year, supporting their pursuit of a successful, long-term, portable career. This centralized, virtual program, is accessed through Military OneSource counseling and funding, to assist with licensure, certification or education opportunities leading to portable employment opportunities.
If you are considering applying for unemployment benefits, contact your losing state's unemployment benefits representative for the appropriate paperwork. When you resign your position, include a statement to the effect that you are resigning to accompany your military spouse on his/her Permanent Change of Station.
The unemployment rate in the Hampton Roads area is currently above 10%. The median income for the state of Virginia is $74,222.
For information on local and federal employment opportunities on base, visit the Airman and Family Readiness Center (Langley Air Force Base, 757-764-3990) or the Army Community Center (Fort Eustis, 757-878-3638).
