The American Red Cross provides 24/7 emergency communications and financial assistance (via Army Emergency Relief) to Fort Riley service members, veterans, and their families. For immediate after-hours emergencies, contact the main Armed Forces Emergency line.

Available Resources & Services:

• Emergency Communications: Delivery of urgent family messages, including birth notifications and verification of family medical emergencies.
• Financial Assistance: Access to emergency funds, including coordination with Army Emergency Relief during normal hours, as well as after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
• Community Programs: Coordination of installation volunteer programs, information on local blood drives, and enrollment in health and safety courses.
• Support Services: Disaster assistance, deployment readiness services, information referral, and dedicated resources for veterans.

Army Emergency Relief is the Army's own emergency financial assistance organization and is dedicated to "Helping the Army Take Care of Its Own."

Army Emergency Relief provides commanders a valuable asset in accomplishing their basic command responsibility for the morale and welfare of the following:

• An active-duty service member
• A service member of an activated National Guard or Reserve unit
• An immediate family member of a service member in the above two categories
• A military retiree or spouse/widow(er) of a retiree

Below are examples of categories where Army Emergency Relief may be able to assist.

• Rent/Mortgage
• Food
• Utilities
• Personally-owned vehicle repairs/maintenance
• Emergency travel
• Much, much more

Any relief provided will be in the form of a zero percent interest loan, a grant, or a combination of loan and grant. Repayment of AER loans is processed through allotments if it's a loan. Army Emergency Relief's Headquarters identifies your allotment with the Defense Finance Accounting System. The DFAS will start and stop your Army Emergency Relief allotment. If for any reason you desire information regarding your loan, you must visit your local AER office. No information regarding your loan may be released telephonically. Army Emergency Relief is located in the Army Community Services facility. Services are available Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 785-239-9435 for assistance.

Emergencies during your PCS move:

• Immediate Financial Relief: Army Emergency Relief provides interest-free loans or grants if you experience an unexpected financial crisis (such as vehicle breakdowns, travel delays, or food/lodging shortages) during your Permanent Change of Station.
• 24/7 Red Cross Backup: If an emergency occurs after hours, on weekends, or during holidays, contact the American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Line at 877-272-7337 to initiate emergency AER financial assistance.
• Keep Documents Hand-Carried: Never pack vital documents (orders, IDs, vehicle registrations, or financial/legal papers) in your household goods shipment. Keep them physically with you at all times during transit

Common Relocation Pitfalls to Avoid

• Packing Essential Records: Do not place your passports, medical files, marriage certificates, power of attorney, or PCS orders inside household goods boxes. If those shipments are delayed, you may face severe delays in in-processing or securing emergency medical care.
• Failing to Call Ahead on Leave: If your travel is delayed due to an emergency (such as a vehicle breakdown while coming to Ft Riley), always call the 1st Replacement Company or your sponsor immediately to prevent being classified as AWOL
• Lending Closet Support: Don't buy temporary household items when you arrive. Fort Riley ACS operates a Lending Closet where you can borrow basic kitchen items, pots, pans, and dining utensils for up to 45 days while waiting on your household goods shipment.
