To help you get settled in as smoothly as possible after your move, important items should be carried with you for safe keeping and easy access.
Important documents:
The most important items to keep with you during a PCS are your vital documents. Electronic copies can be convenient, but make sure to have physical copies as well.
When receipts and travel documents are submitted to the command or any military agency, the service member or family should keep a copy for their own records.
Essentials for your trip and first nights in your new home
Because moving delivery delays can happen, it’s a good idea to carry essential items with you. Some items to consider carrying with you are:
Temporary Lodging Reservations
Service members are strongly encouraged to ask their detaching or gaining command (personnel office) about Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE), which can offset the cost of temporary housing at the losing or gaining duty station. TLE is only authorized in the vicinity of the old/new Permanent Duty Station (PDS); it is not authorized for house hunting. For more information on TLE see the Joint Travel Regulations or DoD Travel Management Office.
