Check-in Procedures

New service members checking into Naval Submarine Base New London must report to their specific command element or designated processing location depending on their unit type, during normal working hours Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Initial Steps & Lodging

1. The Very First Step (All Personnel)

Before you go to your school or office, you must report to the Navy Gateway Inns & Suites in Building 429.

• Why: They must stamp and endorse your orders so you can get paid back for your lodging costs (Temporary Lodging Expense).
• Availability: They are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can call them at 860-694-3416.

2. Where to Report During Normal Working Hours

Normal processing hours are generally Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Go to the designated location for your assignment:

• Submarine School Students & Staff: Report directly to the main quarterdeck in Building 499.
• General SUBASE Personnel: Report to the Personnel Support Detachment located in Building 83.
• COMSUBGRU 2 Staff: Report to Grenfell Hall in Building 439.
• Medical Personnel: Report directly to the Naval Branch Health Clinic New England – Groton.

3. Arriving After Hours or on Weekends

If you arrive at night, over the weekend, or on a holiday, you must contact the Command Duty Officer at 860-625-9644 to have your orders signed and officially endorsed.

4. What to Bring to Your Check-In Appointment

Once you check in with your specific command, you will get an appointment with the personnel division.

Documents to Bring

• All official military service records
• Endorsed copy of your PCS orders
• Complete service record
• Travel receipts
• Local address and phone number
• Marriage certificates or dependent paperwork if applicable

Reporting Locations by Unit

• Submarine School Students & Staff: Report to the quarterdeck in Building 499.
• General SUBASE Personnel: Report to the Personnel Support Detachment in Building 83 (7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).
• COMSUBGRU 2 Staff: Report to Grenfell Hall, Building 439.
• Medical Personnel: Report to the Naval Branch Health Clinic New England – Groton.
• Deployed Unit Sailors: Report to the appropriate squadron duty office.
• Afloat/Deployed Unit Sailors: Report to your appropriate squadron duty office.

After-Hours Reporting

• If you arrive after normal working hours, get your orders stamped/endorsed at the Combined Bachelor Quarters (CBQ / Navy Gateway Inn and Suites) or contact the Command Duty Officer.
• Report to your ultimate assigned command at 7 a.m. on the next business day.

Navy Inn: (Navy Gateway Inns and Suites) Check-In Procedures

Important Check-in Information:

Before arranging any temporary lodging, please check in at the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites. Service members, regardless of marital status, must obtain either an endorsement of their orders or a non-availability certificate from NGIS. Both the endorsement or certificate of nonavailability and lodging receipts must be submitted to the Personnel Support Detachment for reimbursement of temporary lodging expenses on your travel claim. The Navy Lodge: “Check-in Procedures”:

Make lodging arrangements in advance at the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites. Obtain a waiver if you and your family members cannot be accommodated. Then contact the Navy Lodge at 860-446-3119 to arrange your lodging. If so, you must provide them with the waiver to qualify for reimbursement. The Navy allows up to two pets, provided each pet does not exceed 70 pounds. Your sponsor can provide information on kennel and boarding options for pets that surpass the Navy Lodge's capacity. Get Married Enroute

If you get married en route, before you PCS, you must inform your commander. If you get married, have a newborn child or adopt a child before you complete your PCS move, you must inform your chain of command and follow the procedures exactly as you are given them. The military will not pay for travel and housing of your family members if you do not follow proper procedures. Your Service Record Page 2 must have all family members recorded before executing your PCS orders.

Note: Now, if you get married before joining the military, this tax-free housing allowance begins on the very first day of active duty (the first day of basic training). If a service member waits until after joining the military to get married, the housing allowance becomes effective on the date of the marriage.

Your first stop after the wedding should be the nearest military ID card issuing facility to enroll in DEERS, the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System. Once enrolled, you can access military benefits, including health care and health insurance. To enroll in DEERS, gather the necessary documents, such as a birth certificate, a Social Security card and two forms of Identification, such as a driver’s license, and a school or work ID.

Other things to know:

1. Obtain your military identification card at the installation ID facility.
2. Memorize your and your spouse’s Social Security number.
3. Update your driver’s license and Social Security card if you change your name.
4. Understand your service member’s pay and benefits.
