Relocation Assistance

Your Military and Family Support Center provides relocation assistance to help make PCS moves as smooth as possible. Resources include:

• PCS planning: Most relocation assistance programs offer consultations to help you with the moving process. If this your first military move, your first time moving overseas or you have challenging or complex circumstances contact your installation Relocation Assistance Program as soon as possible for support.
• Plan My Move: An online War Department relocation tool that provides you with customizable checklists and links to helpful resources for the tasks ahead.

• Workshops and briefings: Workshops vary by location. You may find classes on housing options, moving with children, moving with pets and more.
• Predeparture briefings: These sessions provide essential information about your move and may be required for some populations.
• Special needs: If you have a child or family member enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program, contact your installation EFMP-Family Support office to assist you.
• Settling-in services: Look for welcome programs or local area tours that may be offered. Overseas services may include introductory language classes and cultural awareness activities.
• Foreign-born spouse support: Assistance includes information and referral to resources such as immigration and naturalization.
• Emergency assistance: Sometimes emergencies occur while moving. The Military and Family Support Center has the resources to provide emergency financial assistance, as well as information and referrals.
• Authorized housing flexibility options: Eligible service members with PCS orders may be entitled to flexibilities such as extended stays in government housing and early housing eligibility. Contact your military personnel office for more information.
• Spouse licensure reimbursement: Your service branch may reimburse spouses up to $1,000 for relicensure and certification costs resulting from relocations or PCS moves. The Fleet and Family Support Center offers relocation assistance with a pre-move workshop, one-on-one relocation counseling, help with ordering a Welcome Aboard package and much more. Newcomers are encouraged to contact the Housing Services Office upon receipt of orders for information. The FFSC can provide small household items to incoming relocating personnel on permanent change of station orders to assist until the arrival of your household goods. PCS orders must be presented to borrow the items. Call 860-694-1749, or 860-694-3383 in advance for item availability. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is closed Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

1. Installation-specific Information: To help make moving a positive experience, contact the Relocation Assistance Program office at your present command. RAP personnel can help you locate information about your new duty station. Also, request a sponsor at your earliest opportunity. There is no substitute for a good sponsor at your new duty station. A sponsor can provide you with specific information and give you an inside look at your new community. He or she has “been there and done that” and probably has the T-shirt to prove it.
2. Schedule your appointment with household goods as soon as you have a good idea of your transfer date. Remember, you will need to bring in four copies of your orders, and if you have family members, you'll need a recent leave and earnings statement or a copy of your Page 2 to receive the “with dependents” weight allowances. The household goods office will provide you with specific information on your personal property move and storage.
3. Don't forget to notify your landlord, banks and credit unions, schools, hospital, utility and phone companies and the post office of your upcoming move.
4. Make reservations for temporary lodging at your new duty station, either at the barracks if unaccompanied, or the Navy Lodge or other short-term billeting if traveling accompanied. During the move, hand carry important papers and information such as birth certificates, medical and shot records, your sponsor's name and phone number and your Welcome Aboard package. Do not place these items with your household goods for shipment. Don't forget that your orders require you to notify your detaching and gaining commands of your PCS leave address and phone number. When you arrive at your new duty station, contact your new command and tell them that you are in the area. Your sponsor may meet you upon arrival. If this was not possible, call and let him or her know you are in town.

Scheduling your Move – Use Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to schedule your move with a transportation company.

Your Moving Allowance – Moving allowances are generally based on the overall weight of your household goods. Any overages on your approved weight will be your financial responsibility, so work hard to make sure you stay within your weight allowance. Current weight authorizations can be found on the Navy Supply Systems Command website.

Household Goods Weight Estimator: Get to know how much your personal belongings weigh with the Weight Estimator Tool. Enter the number of items you have for each type, then click "Calculate" for that category. At the bottom of the page is a Grand Total Estimate that you can use to compare to your Entitlement, and prepare for your move. 1. Shipping Your Vehicle (if applicable): through the Navy, Visit International Auto Logistics to schedule an appointment at your assigned Vehicle Processing Center through the PCSmyPOV website. If you plan to ship a vehicle through a private company, make sure the authorization is posted on your orders and submit on a Travel Claim (1351-2). Check with your local Personal Property Office or with transportation for additional information regarding your vehicle.
2. Claims (Travel/Damage) When moving into your new residence, double-check your household goods as they are unloaded and unpacked. Report any loss or damage as soon as possible to the personal property office.
