A wide range of programs are available for youth and teens, including youth sports and recreation programs, educational programs and programs that support leadership and career development. Please review the information to learn what programs and services are available at this installation.
The Subbase Youth Center, the Fleet and Family Support Center, the Groton Youth and Family Services and numerous church youth groups are some of the organizations which foster positive youth development. Call FFSC, 860-694-3383.
During the summer months, there are soccer, gymnastics, and judo camps. Throughout the year classes in piano, dance, swimming, judo, and gymnastics are some of the offerings at the Subbase Youth Center.
Youth Center: The Subbase Youth Center is a member of the Boys & Girls Club of America. Also several area churches have well-organized, very active youth groups which meet in their respective churches. These sites have the atmosphere of a "Drop-In Center" for teens.
Youth Employment: The Human Resources Office, the MWR Human Resources Office, the local Park and Recreation Departments, the youth service agency in each community and the Department of Labor - Connecticut Works offer assistance for youth employment. Many of the opportunities focus on the summer months only.
Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer opportunities are also available. The American Red Cross welcomes youths between the ages of 13 and 18 for year round opportunities. Another avenue for teens over the age of 16 is the Military Volunteer Program for Youth.
The SAC Program provides quality care for children in a safe and supportive environment. SAC offers educational and recreational activities designed to provide children with opportunities for growth in mind and body, self-discovery, life skills and community involvement. SAC is accredited by the National After school Association since 2002 and is a member of the Boys and Girls Club of America.
Youth Programs for ages 5 to 18 years are provided in military youth and teen program facilities worldwide. A wide variety of offerings includes activities in health and wellness, sports and recreation, the arts, education, and career development, as well as leadership and service programs. In collaboration with other youth-serving organizations, such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and USDA 4-H programs.
School-age care programs provide care to children in kindergarten through seventh grade. (K-7th) Care is offered before and after school, and during non-school days (e.g. spring break and teacher work days) and summer vacations. School-age care programs may be located in Defense Department youth centers, school-age care facilities, child development centers, or other suitable facilities. All programs are certified by the DOD and accredited by a national accrediting body, such as the Council on Accreditation.The New London CDCs are located off base on 7 Highland Ave. in Buildings 186, 386, and 383 registrations and can be reached at 860-448-6838.
